Tuition Free Universities in Norway for International Students

Norway is an extremely popular study destination for international students because Norwegian education is very high quality. Generally, universities and state university colleges do not charge tuition fees for both native and foreign students because government finances education with taxpayers' money. However, certain programmes/courses may have fees. Private institutions normally do charge tuition fees.

According to the official Norwegian web site, www.studyinnorway.no: “Living expenses in Norway are considered to be higher than in many other countries. You should expect to have NOK 8900 - per month for subsistence.” True, living in Norway has a reputation for being expensive, but studying in Norway may not be as expensive as you think! The estimate of NOK 8900 (approx. EURO 1200) per month for subsistence refers to board and lodgings, clothing, transport, medical and dental care and other necessities. Living expenses vary from person to person depending on personal habits.

Study & Scholarships has compiled as comprehensive a list as it could come across of tuition-free Norwegian state/public schools. Private schools have also been added to the list. The Norwegian higher education sector consists of eight universities, nine specialised university institutions, 20 state university colleges, two national academies of the arts and 16 private colleges. Google Research Awards ($150000) in Sciences and Engineering for Academic Institutions Worldwide

Google Research Awards in Sciences and Engineering

Course(s) Offered: Sciences, Engineering, related fields
Course Level: Graduate (research)
Provider: Google Inc.
Country to Study in: Any country

Scholarship Description
Google is committed to developing new technologies to help users find and use information. As part of its vision to maintain strong ties with academic institutions worldwide pursuing innovative research in core areas relevant to our mission, the Google Research Awards program aims to identify and support world-class, full-time faculty pursuing research in areas of mutual interest.

Google Research Awards are one-year awards structured as unrestricted gifts to universities to support the work of world-class full-time faculty members at top universities around the world. Faculty members can apply for Research Awards by submitting a proposal to one of two 2013 funding rounds.

Eligibility
Who is eligible to apply for a Faculty Research Award?

Institutions:
  • We accept applications from full-time professors at universities around the world. Our funding is focused on supporting PhD students, so we do allow applications from professors at research institutions that award research degrees to PhD students. We do not allow applications from professors, researchers, or faculty members at non-degree-granting research institutes. Researchers at such institutes who are also professors on the faculty of a university may apply through that university.
  • Our funding is structured as unrestricted gifts to universities. We cannot process awards to other institutions (e.g. not-for-profits institutions, hospitals, non-degree-granting research institutes, etc) even if they are affiliated with a university. A PI must apply in his or her capacity as a university professor and must be able to accept an award through that university.
Principal Investigators (PIs):
  • Each PI on a proposal must be a full-time professor at a university or a degree-granting research institution.
  • We allow assistant professors, associate professors, and full professors to apply. We do not allow applications from professors on behalf of students, postdocs, or others who are not eligible to apply themselves--the research must be directed primarily by a full-time faculty member.
  • We understand that titles may differ globally. In order for someone without the title of professor to apply, he or she must be a full-time faculty member at an eligible institution and serve as a formal advisor to masters or PhD students, and the funding requested must go to support students (see below for clarification on eligible expenses). We may, at our discretion, provide funding (in the form of student salary costs) for PIs who advise undergraduate students at colleges that do not award advanced degrees.
  • The same eligibility requirements apply to both the primary PI and any co-PIs. We do not allow students, postdocs, or non-professor researchers who do not meet the criteria above to serve as PIs or co-PIs.
  • The primary PI on a proposal is the point person for all communications regarding the proposal, including funding decisions. All emails regarding the application will go to the primary PI, who is responsible for notifying any co-PIs and university administrators if needed.
  • There are no limits on the number of proposals that can be submitted by different PIs (or co-PIs) from the same university.
Past Applicants:
  • An applicant may only serve as PI or co-PI on one proposal per round.
  • If an applicant’s proposal was not selected for funding the previous round, they are welcome to apply with a new proposal (or substantively revised proposal) the following round.
  • If an applicant’s proposal was funded through a Research Award (as a PI or a co-PI), we ask that he or she wait at least one year from the application deadline of the round where he or she received funding before applying again. For example, in a year where the application deadlines are April 15 and October 15, we ask that a PI or co-PI who is funded through the April 15 round not submit an application to the October 15 round.
  • We ask that PIs not submit the same proposal to multiple rounds of the Research Awards. If a proposal is not selected for funding and the PI resubmits it the following round without substantive revisions, we will not fund it. If a PI is submitting a revised proposal, he or she should check the appropriate box on the application form to let us know.
Restrictions:
All award payments and recipients will be reviewed for compliance with relevant US and international laws, regulations and policies. Google reserves the right to withhold funding that may violate laws, regulations or our policies.

Eligible Groups
Students from 62 developing countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe.

The chances of obtaining an NFP fellowship increase if you live and work in Sub-Saharan Africa and/or if you are a woman.

Half of the available fellowships should be awarded to female candidates and the other half should be spent on candidates from sub-Saharan Africa. Apart from this, priority is given to candidates from priority groups and/or from marginalized regions to be defined by the embassies.

Participating Institution(s)
Dutch Universities and Institutions of higher learning

Field(s) of study
The list of short courses that are supported by the fellowships can be found at NFP course list for short courses (see link below under 'DEADLINES').

All NFP courses are full-time courses, including a select number of e-learning courses. Consult the official Studyfinder database for programmes and courses eligible for an NFP fellowship.

Scholarship Benefits
The NFP allowance is considered to be a contribution towards the cost of living for the fellowship holder. A fellowship holder can therefore be faced with additional expenses (for instance extra costs for housing). Fellowship holders are adviced to check with the dutch institution if this can be the case for them. The allowances are not sufficient to support family members, either in the home country or in the Netherlands.

Method of Application
To be eligible for an NFP fellowship, candidates need to be admitted to the short course for which they would like an NFP fellowship. Then:
  • Obtain academic admission: Candidates first apply for admission directly to the Dutch institution that offers the short course of their choice. The Dutch institution assesses the application and decides whether or not to admit the candidate to the short course. Nuffic has no part in the academic admission process.
  • Prepare your application for an NFP fellowship: A candidate applying for an NFP fellowship must have been unconditionally admitted to a Dutch institution for the course or programme for which the candidate applies for an NFP fellowship. This means that the candidate must have met all the academic and administrative requirements set by the Dutch institution.
The application you submit to Nuffic must be complete with all the required documentation according to the required formats. The application must be submitted online through Scholarships Online (SOL) before the fellowship application deadline. Applications that are not submitted according to the required procedure and format will not be accepted.

After you have submitted your application you cannot make any adjustments or additions. Nuffic cannot accept any additional documents sent by email or regular post. These additional documents will not be taken into consideration.

DEADLINES:
The deadline for academic applications is earlier, about 1-2 months earlier, than the fellowship applications deadline. Candidates are strongly advised to apply as early as possible for admission to a Dutch institution to allow these institutions enough time to process all the applications for admission in time.

For 2013-2014, the deadline for fellowship applications is 5 Februrary or 7 May or 1 October in 2013 depending on the course (see the  NFP course list for short courses (PDF, 48.4kB) to know the specific deadline for your chosen course).

Application Deadline: 5 February / 1 May / 2 October 2013
Open to International students: Yes
