PhD Studentships in Glass Coatings for Automobile Application at University of Sheffield in UK

August 06, 2013

A 3 years PhD position sponsored by Johnson Matthey (JM) is available in ‘Glass coatings for Automobile Application’ from October 1st 2013. PhD Studentships are available in Glass coatings for Automobile Application at University of Sheffield-Department of Materials Science & Engineering in UK. EU, UK and international students are eligible for this PhD studentship. Applicants must have a background in Materials Science and Engineering with physics also an option. Studentship includes stipend per annum. University fees are also covered by the grant for exceptional overseas candidates. Application must be submitted electronically or by post.

Study Subject(s): The scholarship is awarded in Glass coatings for Automobile Application at University of Sheffield in UK.

Course Level: This studentship is for pursuing PhD Position at University of Sheffield in UK.

Scholarship Provider: Johnson Matthey (JM)

Scholarship can be taken at: UK

Eligibility: -The project is an industrial CASE and open to UK, EU and International students. Candidates with a background in Materials Science and Engineering are preferred, with physics also an option.
-The PhD will give the successful candidate a strong background in science led R&D and train the student in a broad skills base of analytical techniques as well as developing a portfolio of soft-skills to encourage communication and knowledge transfer.

Scholarship Open for Students of Following Countries: PhD Studentship is open for UK, EU and International students.

Scholarship Description: University of SheffieldThe project concerns the study and development of glass compositions for use as enamels on automobile windscreens. The student will undertake glass melting and casting and perform enameling studies to study the effect of the coating on strength of the enamel/glass composite. The strain will be quality assessed using polarized light and quantitatively evaluated using nano indentation and acoustic tests. The interface between the enamel and windscreen glass will be studied using advanced transmission electron microscopy. The student will work closely with JM and be expected to undertake short study visits at JM Sonning to perform critical experiments and to liaise with the industrial sponsor. The Department of Material Science & Engineering at the University of Sheffield, with over £80M in research income over the past decade, has an established reputation for world class research that spans metallurgy, electroceramics, polymer composites, advanced manufacturing, glass technology, bio materials, nuclear materials and functional materials. As part of the Faculty of Engineering, we contribute to the third largest engineering faculty (by research income) in the UK and have a culture of interdisciplinary research and cross faculty research groups. We are at the forefront of tackling global challenges such as climate change, sustainable energy and healthcare for an aging population. JM is one of the world’s leading R&D based companies with state of the art labs at the Sonning Common facility which are at the disposal of the project.

Scholarship Description: The Institute of Physiology and Pathophysiology of Heidelberg University, Division of Cardiovascular Physiology (Prof. Dr. Markus Hecker) offers a PhD position to work on zyxin control of stretch-induced arterial remodelling. The focal adhesion molecule zyxin specifically translocates to the nucleus of vascular cells in response to stretch or hypertension. In the nucleus, the protein orchestrates expression of a majority of stretch-/pressure-induced genes, among which mRNAs encoding for matrix proteins and ECM modifying enzymes are prominent. Aged zyxin-deficient mice show a reorientation of the arterial smooth muscle cells (SMCs) in response to hypertension, associated with a more pronounced pressure-induced passive distension and a failure to up-regulate blood pressure. It appears that adult zyxin-deficient mice develop a severe deficit in arterial contractility due to a marked alteration in matrix composition and that the stretch-sensitive transcription factor zyxin has a major impact on the control of vascular SMC phenotype. The project will investigate the role of zyxin-controlled ECM proteins and matrix-modifying enzymes in pressure-induced vascular remodeling both in vitro and in vivo.

What does it cover? The position will come with a yearly living allowance in accordance with the regulations specified by the European Commission for Marie Curie Initial Training Networks.

How to Apply: Please submit your application via the HBIGS website.
