SKA SA Undergraduate and Honours Bursary Programme in South Africa, 2014

South African Square Kilometre Array is funding undergraduate and Honors bursary programme for South African applicants. The bursary is awarded for a Bachelor of Science–Honours degree majoring in Physics and Mathematics and for a Bachelor of Engineering degree (Electronic Engineering or Mechanical Engineering only) at a South African university. The bursary covers tuition fees, living costs (rent, food, travel etc.) and for books and stationery. Online application should be submitted by 30 September 2013.

Eligibility: The following students are eligible for an SKA SA undergraduate or honors bursary:
1. South African citizens ONLY.
2. Students who wish to study, or are studying, towards a Bachelor of Science degree; majoring in Physics and Mathematics, at a South African university.
3. Students who wish to study towards a Bachelor of Science – Honors degree at a South African university; and who majored in Physics and Mathematics at the undergraduate level,
4. Students who wish to study, or are studying, towards a Bachelor of Engineering degree (Electronic Engineering or Mechanical Engineering only), at a South African university.
5. Students who have achieved a minimum C in mathematics and science in Grade 12, or a minimum 60% for major subjects at undergraduate level.
6. Students who intend to pursue postgraduate research in radio astronomy, or in an engineering discipline relevant to radio astronomy.

Scholarship Open for Students of Following Countries: South African applicants are eligible for this Undergraduate and Honors bursary.

Scholarship Description: – The award of an SKA SA undergraduate or honors bursary to a student will be based on academic performance, determined through the evaluation of the student’s most recent Grade 12, or university results. Other selection criteria include academic merit, leadership qualities, and previous award of prizes and honors.
-Students currently completing Grade 12 must include a certified copy of their most recent Grade 12 results with their applications and, when available, a certified copy of their final Grade 12 results.
-Students currently completing the first year, second year or third year of their degree must include a certified copy of ALL university results – from first year to the current year of study, and a certified copy of their final Grade 12 results.
- Students who are awarded a bursary will have to provide proof of registration with a South African university before any funds will be paid to the university, for the student.
- After a bursary is awarded, a change in course of study or institution where the studies are to be undertaken requires approval from the SKA SA. (SKA SA reserves the right not to approve such changes).
- After a bursary is awarded, continued funding is dependent on satisfactory academic performance (maintaining a minimum 60% average in June and December). All successful students will be required to submit their university academic transcripts in June and December of each year, for evaluation by the SKA SA. Students who have obtained a minimum of 60% will not receive further funding from SKA SA.
- Students who do not obtain the degree, for which the bursary was awarded, relinquish their studies, or leave the tertiary institution during the period for which the bursary was awarded, will have to refund all payments of the bursary already received.
-On completion of the studies supported by means of the bursary, students are required to submit a copy of their degree to the SKA SA.

African Humanities Program Scholarships for African Students

Scholarship Description
The African Humanities Program (AHP) seeks to revitalize the humanities in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda through fellowship competitions and meetings associated with them.

Through the activities of the African Humanities Program, the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) promotes local and international cooperation among humanities scholars at all stages of career, with the aim of developing a self-sustaining continent-wide network of African humanities scholars.

The African Humanities Program is inspired by a commitment to the humanities as a core component of higher education and research in Africa, essential to progress and development. The AHP is funded by the Carnegie Corporation of New York.

The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS), with financial support from the Carnegie Corporation of New York, announces competitions yearly for the AHP.

Eligibility
Fellowship Details:

  • Applicants must be nationals and residents of a country in sub-Saharan Africa, with a current affiliation at an institution in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, or Uganda.
  • Funding is available for dissertation completion and for postdoctoral research and writing.
  • Applicants for Dissertation-Completion Fellowships should be in the final year of writing the dissertation at a university in Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania, or Uganda.
  • Dissertation-Completion Fellowships are not available in South Africa.
  • Applicants for Early Career Postdoctoral Fellowships must be working in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, or Uganda and must have completed the Ph.D. no more than eight years ago.
  • Projects must be in the humanities and must be carried out in sub-Saharan Africa. AHP fellowships may not be used for travel outside the continent.

Any recognized institution in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, or Uganda.

The AHP organizes meetings in Africa in cooperation with host institutions to publicize the fellowship program and to discuss new trends in humanities research. In the past three years of the program, meetings were held at universities in Ghana (University of Ghana-Legon), in Nigeria (University of Ibadan, Bayero University Kano, and Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria), in South Africa (University of the Witwatersrand and the University of Johannesburg in Johannesburg, the East London campus of Ft. Hare University, the University of the Western Cape and University of Cape Town in Cape Town), in Tanzania (the University of Dar es Salaam), and in Uganda (Makerere University in Kampala).

Fields of study
The ACLS defines the humanities as the study of human cultures, languages, and histories through the use of qualitative approaches. Among the disciplines contributing to humanities scholarship are anthropology, archaeology, history, studies of the fine and performing arts, musicology, languages and linguistics, literature studies, religious studies, and philosophy.

Fellowship awards to promising African scholars are the centerpiece of the African Humanities Program. An initiative to publish the best manuscripts produced under the terms of AHP fellowships is now being established. All fellows will be encouraged to submit their completed manuscripts to the African Humanities Series, which will be a cooperative venture between AHP and a major African university press.

Scholarship Description
The program, launched in June 2011, responds to a shortage of experienced faculty in African higher education. The Next Generation Social Sciences in Africa program provides fellowships to nurture the intellectual development and increase retention of early-career faculty in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda.

The program assists fellows to develop research opportunities and skills, obtain doctoral degrees, and participate in robust research communities. Toward this end, the project features a thematic focus in order to renew basic research agendas addressing peace, security, and development topics as well as strengthen interdisciplinary social science research capacity on these issues.

Funded by Carnegie Corporation of New York, this project offers a replicable model at scale and complements foundation initiatives to develop and strengthen the next generation of African scholars.

The three fellowships are: the doctoral dissertation research fellowship, doctoral dissertation completion fellowship and doctoral dissertation proposal fellowship. Fellowship program also offers two workshops each year for fellow’s Masters research in their research publications.

The doctoral dissertation research fellowship: All applicants must be citizens of and reside in a sub-Saharan African country while holding a current faculty position at an accredited college or university in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, or Uganda. Applicants for any of the funding opportunities offered through this program must have a master’s degree and be working toward completion of the doctoral degree. The program seeks to promote diversity and encourages women to apply. To be eligible for the US$15,000 dissertation research fellowship, applicants must have an approved dissertation proposal but will not yet have undertaken research of nine months or more.

  2. The doctoral dissertation completion fellowship: All applicants must be citizens of and reside in a sub-Saharan African country while holding a current faculty position at an accredited college or university in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, or Uganda. Applicants for any of the funding opportunities offered through this program must have a master’s degree and be working toward completion of the doctoral degree. The program seeks to promote diversity and encourages women to apply. To be more eligible for the US$15, 000 dissertation completion fellowship, applicants must be in the final year of writing and have completed at least one dissertation chapter.

  3. The doctoral dissertation proposal fellowship: All applicants must be citizens of and reside in a sub-Saharan African country while holding a current faculty position at an accredited college or university in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, or Uganda. Applicants for any of the funding opportunities offered through this program must have a master’s degree and be working toward completion of the doctoral degree. The program seeks to promote diversity and encourages women to apply. To be eligible for the US$3,000 dissertation proposal fellowship, applicants must be admitted to a graduate program but have yet to undertake dissertation research.
Selection Criteria:
Strong proposals will offer clear and concise descriptions of the project and its significance. Proposals should display a thorough knowledge of the relevant social science literature that applicants will engage and the methodologies relevant to the project. In addition, applicants must demonstrate that all proposed activities are feasible and can be completed in a timely manner.

All proposals will be evaluated for these criteria by an independent, international committee of leading scholars from a range of social science disciplines.

Scholarship benefits
The doctoral dissertation proposal fellowship supports short-term research costs of up to US$3,000 to develop a doctoral dissertation proposal.

The doctoral dissertation completion fellowship supports a one-year leave from teaching responsibilities and a stipend up to US$15,000 to permit the completion of a dissertation that advances research on peace, security, and development topics.

The doctoral dissertation research fellowship supports 9-12 months of dissertation research costs of up to US$15,000 on a topic related to peace, security, and development.

University of Pretoria Scholarships for Commonwealth Countries’ Students in South Africa, 2014

University of Pretoria is offering two Commonwealth PhD scholarships in South Africa. Commonwealth applicants (excluding South African students) are eligible for these scholarships. Applicants must have enrolled at the University of Pretoria. The duration of the scholarships are three years which covers accommodation and living costs, medical aid, books/stationery, research costs, application fee and Visa costs, airfare. Masters students currently registered at the University of Pretoria are not eligible for the Doctoral Scholarships. Application must be submitted by 30 August 2013.

Scholarship Description: The University of Pretoria is a research intensive university. Hence, it is seeking candidates for doctoralUniversity of Pretoria studies who will make significant contributions to its research endeavor. As part of South Africa’s contribution to the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan, the University of Pretoria has made funds available for two doctoral scholarships for students coming from Commonwealth Countries (excluding South African students). These scholarships will be known as the University of Pretoria Commonwealth Doctoral Scholarships and will be awarded on a competitive basis. The University of Pretoria has established a reputation for academic excellence, particularly in relation to some of its major research activities. Information about these research activities can be obtained from the website of the University.

Number of awards offered: The University of Pretoria has made funds available for two doctoral scholarships for students coming from Commonwealth Countries (excluding South African students).

Duration of award(s): The scholarships will be for a maximum period of support of three academic years. Doctoral students who are not able to complete within the maximum three academic year period due to unforeseeable reasons must provide a written motivation supported by their supervisor as to why an extension is necessary. The extension request will be considered by the University’s Institutional Selection Committee. The motivation must also indicate the following:
-The number of additional months that will be required (may not exceed 12 months)
-The research costs required for the extension period.
-The amount of financial support the Supervisor can provide towards the extension period.

What does it cover? The value of the Doctoral Scholarships will be R120 000 in 2014. This amount must be used to cover the following student costs:
-Accommodation and living costs
-Medical Aid
- Books/Stationery
Note: Fees will be covered by the award of a UP Postgraduate Scholarship Research costs will be covered by the Supervisor Additional costs covered by the University: Return flight ticket from home country Shuttle service on arrival in South Africa from OR Tambo International Airport to Pretoria and return from Pretoria to OR Tambo on completion. Application fee and Visa costs which will be refunded on proof of receipts on arrival.

Selection Criteria: Awards of these scholarships will be based on:
-Academic performance of the candidate.
-Potential to undertake advanced research activities.
-Leadership qualities.
-Evidence of research accomplishment at the masters’ level by means of publications or other appropriate products of the work undertaken.
-Prizes and honors received.
