Miles Morland Foundation Writing Scholarship for Africans, 2013

Miles Morland Foundation offers writing scholarship for writers every year. Up to three scholarships are awarded to African applicants or both of whose parents were born in Africa. The Scholars will receive a grant of £18,000, paid monthly over the course of one year. The scholarship is intended to enable writers to write a new work (fiction or non-fiction writing). The writing must be in English. Applicants have to submit the brief description of their writing of (ideally 200 – 500 words). Application should be submitted via email by October 31st 2013.

Study Subject(s): The scholarship is provided for fiction or non-fiction writing but not poetry, plays or screenplays.
 
Course Level: The scholarship is intended to enable writers to write a new work not complete a work in progress. A “new work” is one which you have not yet begun writing.

Eligibility: To qualify for the Scholarship a candidate must submit a piece of published work, or an excerpt from a piece of published work, of between two and seven thousand words to be evaluated by a panel set up by the MMF which will include MMF trustees and past participants in the Caine Prize.

Scholarship Description: It can be difficult for writers in the early stages of their career to write and to earn a living outside writing at the same time. To help fill this need the MMF has established up to three Morland Writing Scholarships every year. The Scholarships will be open to anyone who has been born in Africa or both of whose parents were born in Africa. In return for this the Scholars will agree that 20% of whatever they subsequently receive from what they write during the year of the Scholarship will be paid to the MMF which may be used to support other promising writers and possibilities to expand the Scholarship scheme in later years.

Number of award(s): MMF has established up to three Morland Writing Scholarships every year.

Duration of award (s): The duration of the scholarship is one year.

What does it cover? The Scholars will receive a grant of £18,000, paid monthly over the course of one year.

Notification: The Scholarships will be announced in December 2013 and will run for the whole of calendar 2014.

How to Apply: Excerpts from your previously published work should be sent as a Word document or a scan of your book or the magazine in which you were published. In all cases please provide easily accessible information as to where your work was published. Scans and Word documents should be emailed to MMF-at-blakman.com.

African Humanities Program Scholarships for African Students

Scholarship Description
The African Humanities Program (AHP) seeks to revitalize the humanities in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda through fellowship competitions and meetings associated with them.

Through the activities of the African Humanities Program, the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) promotes local and international cooperation among humanities scholars at all stages of career, with the aim of developing a self-sustaining continent-wide network of African humanities scholars.

The African Humanities Program is inspired by a commitment to the humanities as a core component of higher education and research in Africa, essential to progress and development. The AHP is funded by the Carnegie Corporation of New York.

The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS), with financial support from the Carnegie Corporation of New York, announces competitions yearly for the AHP.

Eligibility
Fellowship Details:

  • Applicants must be nationals and residents of a country in sub-Saharan Africa, with a current affiliation at an institution in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, or Uganda.
  • Funding is available for dissertation completion and for postdoctoral research and writing.
  • Applicants for Dissertation-Completion Fellowships should be in the final year of writing the dissertation at a university in Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania, or Uganda.
  • Dissertation-Completion Fellowships are not available in South Africa.
  • Applicants for Early Career Postdoctoral Fellowships must be working in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, or Uganda and must have completed the Ph.D. no more than eight years ago.
  • Projects must be in the humanities and must be carried out in sub-Saharan Africa. AHP fellowships may not be used for travel outside the continent.

Any recognized institution in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, or Uganda.

The AHP organizes meetings in Africa in cooperation with host institutions to publicize the fellowship program and to discuss new trends in humanities research. In the past three years of the program, meetings were held at universities in Ghana (University of Ghana-Legon), in Nigeria (University of Ibadan, Bayero University Kano, and Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria), in South Africa (University of the Witwatersrand and the University of Johannesburg in Johannesburg, the East London campus of Ft. Hare University, the University of the Western Cape and University of Cape Town in Cape Town), in Tanzania (the University of Dar es Salaam), and in Uganda (Makerere University in Kampala).

Fields of study
The ACLS defines the humanities as the study of human cultures, languages, and histories through the use of qualitative approaches. Among the disciplines contributing to humanities scholarship are anthropology, archaeology, history, studies of the fine and performing arts, musicology, languages and linguistics, literature studies, religious studies, and philosophy.

Scholarship benefits
Stipends are $9,000 for dissertations and $16,000 for postdoctoral work.

Fellowship awards to promising African scholars are the centerpiece of the African Humanities Program. An initiative to publish the best manuscripts produced under the terms of AHP fellowships is now being established. All fellows will be encouraged to submit their completed manuscripts to the African Humanities Series, which will be a cooperative venture between AHP and a major African university press.

ACLS encourages the submission of applications via email. Application forms and instructions are available on the ACLS website. Application can be submitted by email to ahp@acls.org or mailed to the ACLS New York offices.

Scholarship Description
A wide range of International Scholarships are awarded for full-time Masters degree at the University of Westminster to students from developing and commonwealth countries.

Particular preference will be given to applicants that can demonstrate how the knowledge they will acquire from their studies will aid the development of their home countries.

Eligibility
Criteria may differ slightly for each scholarship offer. However, you must be an international student from a developing country and hold an offer for a full-time Masters degree.

Please note that you should only apply for the level of funding you actually need as the university assumes that you are applying for the minimum funding you require to take the course and it does not consider you for smaller scholarships if you are unsuccessful in gaining the larger one.

Scholarship Description
The program, launched in June 2011, responds to a shortage of experienced faculty in African higher education. The Next Generation Social Sciences in Africa program provides fellowships to nurture the intellectual development and increase retention of early-career faculty in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda.

The program assists fellows to develop research opportunities and skills, obtain doctoral degrees, and participate in robust research communities. Toward this end, the project features a thematic focus in order to renew basic research agendas addressing peace, security, and development topics as well as strengthen interdisciplinary social science research capacity on these issues.

Funded by Carnegie Corporation of New York, this project offers a replicable model at scale and complements foundation initiatives to develop and strengthen the next generation of African scholars.

The three fellowships are: the doctoral dissertation research fellowship, doctoral dissertation completion fellowship and doctoral dissertation proposal fellowship. Fellowship program also offers two workshops each year for fellow’s Masters research in their research publications.

  1. The doctoral dissertation research fellowship: All applicants must be citizens of and reside in a sub-Saharan African country while holding a current faculty position at an accredited college or university in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, or Uganda. Applicants for any of the funding opportunities offered through this program must have a master’s degree and be working toward completion of the doctoral degree. The program seeks to promote diversity and encourages women to apply. To be eligible for the US$15,000 dissertation research fellowship, applicants must have an approved dissertation proposal but will not yet have undertaken research of nine months or more.

  2. The doctoral dissertation completion fellowship: All applicants must be citizens of and reside in a sub-Saharan African country while holding a current faculty position at an accredited college or university in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, or Uganda. Applicants for any of the funding opportunities offered through this program must have a master’s degree and be working toward completion of the doctoral degree. The program seeks to promote diversity and encourages women to apply. To be more eligible for the US$15, 000 dissertation completion fellowship, applicants must be in the final year of writing and have completed at least one dissertation chapter.

  3. The doctoral dissertation proposal fellowship: All applicants must be citizens of and reside in a sub-Saharan African country while holding a current faculty position at an accredited college or university in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, or Uganda. Applicants for any of the funding opportunities offered through this program must have a master’s degree and be working toward completion of the doctoral degree. The program seeks to promote diversity and encourages women to apply. To be eligible for the US$3,000 dissertation proposal fellowship, applicants must be admitted to a graduate program but have yet to undertake dissertation research.
Selection Criteria:
Strong proposals will offer clear and concise descriptions of the project and its significance. Proposals should display a thorough knowledge of the relevant social science literature that applicants will engage and the methodologies relevant to the project. In addition, applicants must demonstrate that all proposed activities are feasible and can be completed in a timely manner.

All proposals will be evaluated for these criteria by an independent, international committee of leading scholars from a range of social science disciplines.

Scholarship benefits
The doctoral dissertation proposal fellowship supports short-term research costs of up to US$3,000 to develop a doctoral dissertation proposal.

The doctoral dissertation completion fellowship supports a one-year leave from teaching responsibilities and a stipend up to US$15,000 to permit the completion of a dissertation that advances research on peace, security, and development topics.

The doctoral dissertation research fellowship supports 9-12 months of dissertation research costs of up to US$15,000 on a topic related to peace, security, and development.

One Africa Award – A Chance for African Individuals and Organizations to Win US$100,000

One Africa Award for African Individuals and Organizations

Scholarship Description
The ONE Africa Award celebrates innovations and progress towards achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the world’s blueprint to a better future, ranging from halving extreme poverty to halting the spread of HIV/AIDS and providing universal primary education.

The organisation is proud to launch the call for applications and nominations for the 2013 ONE Africa Award. The ONE Africa Award aims to recognize, reward, and advance the exceptional work of organizations, founded by Africans and based in Africa, dedicated to helping Africa achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

The $100,000 award will bring recognition to innovative African efforts to fight poverty and will incentivize more of such efforts. The award may be split into two prizes in order to award two smaller organizations better able to absorb a smaller monetary award.

Eligibility
Award recipients can be exceptional individuals, organizations or other groups demonstrating commitment and success in assisting Africans in meeting one or more of the MDGs through innovative advocacy based programs.

  • Qualified recipients may be engaged in direct services to achieve any of the MDGs but must demonstrate a strong advocacy component integral to the delivery and success of their programs.
  • Qualified recipients may be advocacy/pressure groups and think tanks engaged in governance activities such as the monitoring of flows of resources and/or holding governments accountable to commitments to MDG attainment.
2013 Award Criteria:
The 2013 ONE AFRICA Award will award best practices by an African organization or individual addressing social development issues through innovative advocacy in promotion of MDG attainment.

Nominated individuals/organizations will be graded in 5 categories and will be awarded between 1-10 points in each of these categories:
  1. Extent to which the individual/organization has designed and implemented an innovative advocacy program that employs new approaches to impact in a given sector(s).
  2. Ability to demonstrate and communicate specific indicators of progress and impact linking work to a given sector(s) in a clear results framework;
  3. Demonstration of the ability to replicate efforts of the individual/ organization to take intervention to scale
  4. Demonstration of strong accountability mechanisms i.e. community leadership consultations/ involvement in programs, transparency of operations
  5. Extent to which the individual/organization has employed creative partnerships to achieve its goal and ensure coordination with other development actors. These partnerships may include public and/or private sector players.
The eligible organizations must be founded by Africans and be based in Africa. Evidence of success in previous projects as well as funding support for previous project activities must also be included.

Individual citizens, organizations or groups of AFRICAN origin.

The eligible organizations must be founded by citizens of the African Union’s member states and be registered and based in a member state of the African Union. Evidence of success in previous projects as well as funding support for previous project activities must also be included.

Award benefits
BONUS: For the 2013 prize, organizations that demonstrate specific projects, initiatives and plans to accelerate the attainment of the MDGs in their country in these last 1000 days of the MDGs will receive up to 5 bonus points in the scoring of their applications. The successful organizations will clearly demonstrate results already obtained through these efforts.
