2013 Web Of Life Foundation International Essay Competition

Individuals around the world are invited to apply for the 2013 Web Of Life (WOL) Foundation International Annual Essay Competition in the USA. WOL Foundation is a US-based  non-profit organization aimed at encouraging dialogue and fresh thinking on subjects related to socio-environmental questions. The annual essay competition is aimed at encouraging young people to tell their story and give the world their point of view.

The essay seeks ideas presented in a high quality, non-technical style. Opinion on socio-environmental issues are welcomed. The selection process will reward two main attributes in the submissions received: fresh thinking and a clear, compelling writing style.

Prizes

    The winning entry will receive a cash prize of $1,500. A further $500 will be awarded to the second placed entry.

    The shortlisted entries will be published as a book of collected essays.

Subject and Theme

    All essays submitted to the competition must focus on socio-environmental issues and address the current year’s theme. Essays that are off subject and off theme will be rejected.
    The theme for the 2013 competition is: An Aspirational Future
    Any and all views on the specified theme are welcome and encouraged.
    Entries should address all perspectives creatively. Just avoid tired ideas that have been hashed out many times before.

Eligibility

    Everyone is welcome. Any one individual may submit up to three entries.
    Entries should be written in prose in the English language.
    Short stories or essay, factual commentary or fiction – whichever way and whichever writing style applicants may choose to communicate their ideas. They should be compelling.

    Essays should be aimed at a general readership and should be non-technical. No footnotes or citations are allowed.
    Submissions should be no longer than 2,000 words.
    Essays may have been published before provided you have the necessary permissions to re-publish.
    For those from countries where English are not there first language, the competition is  mainly after clearly presented ideas not language perfection.
    If applicants essay reaches the finalists, it will be edited in the local language.

How to Submit Your Entry

All applicants should ensure they abide by the following rules. Entries that do not comply fully with this guide will not be accepted.

    Entiries must be submitted as a digital file saved in Microsoft Word (.doc) format. DO NOT send the essay text in the body of an email.
    Manuscripts must be written in English, double spaced, no longer than 2,000 words and contain no abstract, list of references or footnotes.
    files should be saved only with the essay title as the file name.
    applicants should not start or include “WOLF essay competition” or any other such generic statement in the file name.
    The Microsoft Word document with  essay should also include in the same document the name, street/postal address and email addresses of the author/s.
    All entries should be submitted by email to submissions@wolfoundation.org
