Each year, the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fund (SEYMF) Council
awards Overseas Fellowship/Scholarship for disabled students from Hong
Kong. This Fellowship/Scholarship is awarded for pursuing full-time
postgraduate or undergraduate studies in any tertiary educational and/or
academic institution outside Hong Kong in the 2014/15 academic
year. Maximum value of fellowship per year is HK$283,000 and the value of scholarship is HK$262,000.
Study Subject (s): Fellowship/Scholarship is awarded for pursuing any one of the courses available at tertiary educational and/or academic institution outside Hong Kong.
Course Level: Fellowship/Scholarship is awarded for pursuing full-time postgraduate or undergraduate studies in any tertiary educational and/or academic institution outside Hong Kong.

Eligibility: An applicant for the Fellowship must fulfill the following criteria:-
(i) Be a permanent resident of Hong Kong;
(ii) Has received at least 7 years of continuous full-time education in Hong Kong;
(iii) Be responsible for fulfilling all application procedures and admission requirements at the institution of his / her choice and be offered a place subsequently;
(iv) Holds a good honours degree obtained in Hong Kong or equivalent qualification OR expects to obtain such a degree or equivalent qualification before 1.9.2014; and
(v) Has a good mastery of the language in which his / her studies will be undertaken.
An applicant for the Scholarship must fulfill the following criteria: –
(i) Be a permanent resident of Hong Kong;
(ii) Has received at least 5 years of continuous full-time education in Hong Kong;
(iii) Be responsible for fulfilling all application procedures and admission requirements at the institution of his / her choice and be offered a place subsequently; and
(iv) Has a good mastery of the language in which his / her studies will be undertaken.
The applicants (for both the Fellowship and Scholarship) should have special educational needs as referred to in the Hong Kong Rehabilitation Programme Plan released by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government.
Scholarship Open for Students of Following Countries: Students of Hong Kong are eligible for these scholarships.
Scholarship Description: The Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fund (SEYMF) Council is offering an award of Fellowship / Scholarship to finance one outstanding disabled student in Hong Kong for overseas studies commencing in the 2014/15 academic year. The successful candidate will be one who has attained a reasonably high standard of scholastic achievements and has demonstrated his / her ability to maintain health of body and mind; to adapt to a new environment; to set a good example for other disabled persons and to be a potential leader in the community. The degree of disability and the need to take up education overseas will also be taken into consideration. He/She is expected to have a strong sense of commitment to Hong Kong and should be able to contribute significantly to the society after graduation from overseas studies.
Number of award (s): One Scholarship/fellowship is offered.
Duration of award (s): For a Fellowship, up to three years for Doctoral degree or two years for Master degree depending on the length of the proposed study programme and subject to the progress of the successful candidate being deemed satisfactory by the Council. For a Scholarship, up to three years subject to the progress of the successful candidate being deemed satisfactory by the Council.
What does it cover? Maximum Value of Award per year:
-Fellowship: HK$283,000
-Scholarship: HK$262,000
In addition, a special one-off grant may be given to the candidate upon application for the purchase of study aids or acquisition of supportive services for study depending on the merits of the case.
Selection Criteria: Applications are reviewed based on several criteria, including:
a. Relevance of the application to the GHF Program objectives
b. Synergy with a VECD site’s research objective
c. Candidate backgrounds and career statements documenting student/trainee success; evidence of ability to adapt, bond, and persist under difficult circumstances; and confirming aptitude and interest in a career in global health and clinical research
d. Engagement with appropriate VECD mentors and letters of support from the proposed mentors and home institution
Notification: Suitable applicants will be invited to attend a selection interview in Hong Kong at around February / March 2014. Any applicant who has not received an invitation to attend an interview by March 2014 may assume that his / her application has been unsuccessful. The decision of the Council shall be final.
