Educationist encourages pupils to practice trade with education

The Director, Midland College, Badagry, Lagos State, Mr. Idowu Akintola, has urged pupils to combine entrepreneurship with formal education.

He said this would reduce the spate of unemployment.

Akintola said this at the school’s graduation ceremony on Thursday.

He gave the example of a directive by the Federal Government that fresh graduates should be exposed to entrepreneurial training while undergoing the National Youth Service Corps scheme.

While addressing graduating students, he urged them not to waste their time while waiting for their West African Senior School Examination results.

He said such time could be spent to acquire vocational training.

Akintola said, “It’s a sad fact that some of you may find it difficult to be admitted into universities of your choice immediately. Out of five million candidates seeking admission into universities yearly, only 600,000 can be accommodated in the few universities around.

“Don’t be dismayed; you can learn a trade while you pursue your dream of getting higher education, instead of roaming the streets.

“The Nigerian environment may appear unfriendly today, but it’s a challenge for you to right the wrongs in our society and stop complaining.

“We have inculcated the virtue of hard work, honesty and integrity in you. So, we expect you to work harder to promote the image of the school as an ambassador.”

The director explained that most renowned scholars and academics advanced in their learning to become educators and top-flight professionals in different fields.

Quoting the human rights lawyer, late Chief Gani Fawehinmi, he said “Stand up for what is right, even if you are standing alone.”

He enjoined all the graduating pupils to use their talents and knowledge to impact the nation positively.
