Applications are invited for 2014/15 UJMT Fogarty global health
fellowship. The fellowship program offers 11-months of mentored clinical
research training for pre and postdoctoral candidates. This program
provides a new opportunity in global health research training for
selected junior faculty, fellows and scholars. US citizens and trainees
from LMIC (low-or middle- income countries) who are currently involved
in research at one of the international training sites affiliated with
one of the four consortium partners are eligible for this fellowship.
Study Subject(s): Fellowship is awarded in the following research topics: Endocrinology, Epidemiology, Environmental Sciences and Engineering, Chinese traditional medicine, Maternal-child health, Mental health/Substance aboce, Nutrition, Oncology, Parasitology, Pediatrics, Primary health care, Reproductive Health, Surgery and Trauma/Burn, Cardiovascular disease, Chikungunya, Childhood asthma, Dengue, Hepatitis, HIV/STI, Hypertension, Influenza, Kidney disease, Leprosy, Malaria, Pneumococcus, Polio, Pulmonary disease, Stroke, Tuberculosis, Zoonotic diseases, Capacity building research and design, Health economics, Health & human rights, Health systems strengthening, Infectious disease modeling, Monitoring & evaluation, Smoking cessation and Vaccination roll-out strategy (rotavirus, HPV).

Scholarship Provider: It is sponsored by the Fogarty International Center and other NIH Institutes, Centers and Offices such as the National Cancer Institute and the Office of Research for Women’s Health.

Eligibility:
-U.S. Citizen, non-citizen national or permanent resident.
-MD’s will have completed residency prior to the departure date for the training site.
-PhD’s will have defended their dissertation prior to the departure date for the training site.
-U.S. trained MD or PhD from any U.S. academic institution can work at one of the established training sites.
-A two-to-three member team can apply to jointly conduct a research project. Each member of the research team must be from a different health science for instance public health, medicine, and biomedical engineering.
-MD’s or PhD’s from one of the four consortia institutions may identify a training site outside of the 17 established training sites.
-Postdoctoral trainees from LMIC (low-or middle- income countries) who are currently involved in research at one of the international training sites affiliated with one of the four consortium partners.
-Those who have, or will have, the in-country equivalent to an MD or PhD level of education prior to the start of the fellowship in the summer of 2013.
Scholarship Open for Students of Following Countries: Students of USA and low-or middle- income countries who are currently involved in research at one of the international training sites (Ghana, Malawi, Swaziland, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Bangladesh, China, India, Malaysia, Thailand, Argentina, Brazil and Peru).
Scholarship Description: The UJMT Fogarty Global Health Fellowship Consortium provides a new opportunity in global health research training for selected junior faculty, fellows, and scholars. This global health fellowship program offers 11-months of mentored clinical research training for pre and postdoctoral candidates. It is sponsored by the Fogarty International Center and other NIH Institutes, Centers and Offices such as the National Cancer Institute and the Office of Research for Women’s Health. Based in over 20 years of research and training collaboration, this consortium brings together 19 primary research training sites in Africa, Asia and South America.
Duration of award (s): Fellowships are offered up to 11 months.
What does it cover? Fellowship trainees originating from the U.S. will receive a monthly stipend dependent upon experience, research funding, health and emergency evacuation insurance, and re-location funds. LMIC trainees will receive stipend support, research funds, and conference travel funds. The expectation for trainees is that they effectively conduct high-quality, ethical research documenting their research findings with at least one publishable, for peer-review paper.
Selection Criteria: All applicants will be judged primarily on the following criteria: training record to date, quality of the research project, previous publications, letters of recommendation, institutional support in terms of supplemental funding and potential faculty appointment, and the likelihood of a successful research career and future academic plans.
